What to check in the live application
Before cropping, note the current form’s photo aspect ratio, pixel dimensions (if specified), resolution, accepted file format, maximum size, and background instructions. Indian applicants use the revised Forms 93/94 from 1 April 2026, so older PAN photo guides may describe a previous upload flow. Protean and UTIITSL requirements are not automatically interchangeable.
Older reference presets often cite a 2.5 × 3.5 cm photo at 200 DPI and 50 KB maximum for Protean/NSDL, or 213 × 213 pixels at 300 DPI and under 30 KB for UTIITSL. Treat these as legacy references unless your current application displays them.
Background color and framing
A plain, light or white background is a common PAN photo preparation recommendation because it separates the subject from the background. Use the color stated by the current application if it gives a specific instruction. Avoid patterned walls, clutter, visible objects, harsh shadows, glare, and strong backlighting. The face should be evenly lit and clearly recognizable.
Frame the applicant straight-on and follow the form’s guidance for head position, face coverage, and shoulders. Leave enough space so the top of the head and chin are not clipped. Keep the crop’s original proportions; resizing must not stretch the face.
Do: prepare a clean, compliant image
- Use a recent, sharp color photo with natural lighting and a neutral expression if the form asks for one.
- Remove distracting background space while keeping the subject correctly framed.
- Use the exact dimensions and aspect ratio shown in the live upload instructions.
- Save in the accepted format and check the resulting file size on your device.
- Open the exported copy and inspect it at full size before uploading.
Don’t: rely on a preset alone
- Do not assume the old 50 KB, 30 KB, or 213 × 213 pixel values apply to every current application.
- Do not use a blurry, low-light, overexposed, or heavily filtered image.
- Do not stretch a portrait into a square or use AI edits that change facial features or identity.
- Do not lower JPEG quality so far that facial details become blocky or smeared.
- Do not treat changing DPI metadata as a substitute for meeting pixel or physical-size requirements.
A PAN card photo resizercan help crop and export an image, but it cannot validate an application form’s latest rules or guarantee approval. Check the current Protean PAN guidanceor UTIITSL application pagebefore submitting.
